The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.〔 It is home to the Portland Fire Museum near the corner of State and Spring Street as well as the Victoria Mansion. In 1988, 7 protesters, include State Representative James V. Oliver, were arrested while trying to block the demolition of an 1857 building on Park Street.
